The L399 Elegant Zebra Pleco is a striking and rare species of Hypancistrus, known for its bold black-and-white horizontal striping and compact size. Often confused with its more famous relative, the L46 Zebra Pleco, the L399 has its own elegant charm and is a favorite among pleco enthusiasts and collectors of South American dwarf catfish.

This peaceful bottom-dweller is well-suited to planted aquariums and biotope-style setups with driftwood, caves, and sandy or fine gravel substrates. It thrives in warm, oxygen-rich water and makes a beautiful, low-key addition to community aquariums with compatible tankmates.

Care Guide

L399 Plecos prefer warm, soft, and clean water with a moderate current and well-oxygenated conditions. Ideal temperatures range from 79–86°F (26–30°C), with a slightly acidic to neutral pH between 6.2 and 7.2. Regular water changes of 25–30% weekly are essential to maintain the pristine conditions this species prefers. A mature aquarium with excellent filtration, gentle flow, and hiding spaces is key to long-term success.

They are shy by nature and need multiple hiding spots such as pleco caves, driftwood tunnels, or rock crevices to feel secure. Dim or subdued lighting will also encourage natural behavior and reduce stress.

L399s are omnivores but lean heavily toward a protein-rich diet. They accept high-quality sinking carnivore pellets and wafers, frozen foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp, and occasional meaty Repashy blends such as Bottom Scratcher or Grub Pie. While not algae grazers, they may nibble on biofilm and benefit from some vegetable matter like blanched zucchini or spinach on occasion.

This pleco is generally peaceful with tankmates but can be mildly territorial toward other bottom-dwellers, especially other Hypancistrus species. Keep only one per tank unless the setup is large and offers ample territory and cover. Ideal tankmates include small tetras, rasboras, pencilfish, and other peaceful mid- to upper-water fish.

Breeding Notes

L399 plecos are cave spawners and can be bred successfully in captivity with the right conditions. A dedicated breeding setup should include warm, soft water, strong oxygenation, and a selection of tight-fitting pleco caves. Males will guard the eggs inside a cave once spawning occurs. Fry emerge in about a week and can be raised on baby brine shrimp, microworms, and finely crushed sinking pellets. Breeding efforts are more successful in groups with a favorable male-to-female ratio.
